It’s a small thing, but it was such a relief when Live got a tuner (incidentally, valuable for tuning samples as well)!
This used to be the weak link with amp-modelling software and hardware.
It’s shocking how different they can sound – it’s not like using a guitar amp. When working on guitar sounds, perhaps more than any other, it’s important to alternate monitoring with headphones and monitors. If you’re likely to have a lot of music gear connected, then Live 10 allows you go into Preferences and name each audio input and output, which can make it faster to set up. You can use any audio interface that has an instrument input, although not all are created equal – you want a clean signal with plenty of gain, otherwise you’ll have to add external boosters which is kind of against the point. Use it to reproduce your current sound in a digital format, or blow the doors off and expand into entirely new sonic territory. Live 10 in particular has added features that make it easier than ever to run a fully functional computer guitar rig. It also makes for a fantastic portable mini-rig if you need to travel light or on a budget. You can put it to work for practice, performance, looping, control, and production, using it instead of, or alongside, your beloved hardware. Ableton Live has always versatile, and that’s just as true for guitarists and bass players as for synth heads or anybody else. However, a new generation of guitarists are far more comfortable with software, computers and mobile devices, so there’s no excuse for anyone to be a tech hold-out any longer.
a long time it seemed like guitarists were resisting using computers, and it’s actually quite easy to understand why.

Unsure about how to do this? Ched out this article from Albeton on MIDI mapping. Your TR-6S is now a dedicated MIDI controller! Dive in and map MIDI values in Live to the parameters on the TR-6S as you would with any other MIDI controller. In Ableton, ensure that the “Remote” button is switched on in the Link MIDI panel in preferences. This disabled the audio engine on the TR-6S. Turn the VALUE knob to the right until “SOUND: Local Sw” is displayed.Press VALUE, then change it to ON and press the VALUE knob. Using the VALUE knob, scroll to the right until you see “MIDI: Tx EditData” on the display. On the TR-6S, press UTILITY to highlight it green. You will need to find another way to listen to the audio from Ableton Live, such as an audio interface or output from your computer. If you choose to use the TR-6S as a MIDI controller, it will disable audio from your TR-6S.

Now that you have installed the required driver and connected the TR-6S to the computer, switch it on and open Ableton Live (the lite version is free!) The TR-6S is USB powered, so connecting it to a computer is all you need to do to power it. Once the driver is downloaded, installed, and troubleshot (if necessary), connect your TR-6S to the computer via a USB cable. It’s all in Roland’s guide in the above link. This is common on new Mac operating systems and can be difficult to fix if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

In my case using Mac OS 10.15, I had to “allow” the driver to install properly. When you click the link and choose your operating system, take note of the troubleshooting link.

To connect your TR-6S with Ableton Live, you will first need to download and install the appropriate drivers for your operating system (Windows or Mac OS). If you have already connected the TR-6S, disconnect it, and then reconnect it after driver installation is completed. Do not connect the TR-6S to your computer before you have finished installing the driver.
